At Sequana, we pride ourselves on providing real industry experiences that showcase the different facets of a career in the water, environment and infrastructure sectors to current university students or those who have recently completed their studies.
Our one-of-a-kind program aims to set participants up for success in their careers, and to make a lasting impact, under the guidance of leading project managers, engineers and other experts within our organisation, as they work side-by-side together on our projects.
Sequana’s Graduate and Internship program is designed to fit in around our interns’ university and study schedules, offering paid part-time or casual working arrangements, with the program’s overall objective to motivate and inspire our interns to pursue a career with real impact in the water industry, showing them how rewarding it can be. And, as we all know, learning doesn’t stop when you receive your degree; in fact, for most of our team, it continues each day with a culture built on continuous learning and growth.
Ahead of National Intern Day, Thursday 25 July, we spoke with Sequana Interns past and present to deep dive into their experiences as part of the program.
Aleena Joy
Aleena is in her final year of an Environmental Engineering Master’s Degree at the University of Melbourne, and she happily shared some valuable insights into the early days of her Sequana experience.
After completing a civil engineering bachelor’s degree, Aleena participated in an internship working in the construction industry.
“I loved what I did daily and really enjoyed coming into work; however, I didn’t like the technical side of things. I swapped from civil engineering to environmental engineering which really resonated with me.”
Luckily for us, Aleena applied to our program.
“Here at Sequana, the opportunity exists for me to have the best of both worlds,” she said.
“There is an abundance of opportunities for professional growth at Sequana, with a real, ongoing focus on improving performance and development, specifically through Sequana Academy and the mentoring program.”
“I’ve worked closely with inspiring leaders – both emerging and more experienced – and there has been a genuine focus on bringing new starters (including interns!) – up to speed to maximise their potential from very early on.”
“I think it’s that realisation I’ve got from shadowing them (leaders) in their work that has helped me actualise my aspirations for the future – wanting to be a leader as great as them and to be the best at what I do.”
When asked to define her experience at Sequana, Aleena explained,
“It’s been so amazing, I’ve found Sequana’s culture to be very refreshing compared to other companies – this is a company that really lives its values, which are embodied throughout the entire organisation.”
Interns are not left to their own devices, and they do not get coffee or complete irrelevant administration tasks; our interns become a part of the team with the program providing a wealth of well-developed resources and structures to empower them on their desired career path.
“There is constant opportunity to grow personally and professionally, which has been an enriching, positive, and rewarding experience overall,” Aleena said.
“The support for new starters enables them to feel both seen and heard.”
We are dedicated to culminating a culture of both happy and healthy workers,
“Everyone is very much into encouraging each other to become a better version of themselves and is committed to delivering outstanding results, on time, on budget, and to a high level of satisfaction. I have left here every day feeling grateful, so if you’re considering applying for an internship at Sequana, I’d highly recommend it – your expectations will be exceeded on all fronts.”
Kasper Hellman
Kaspar Hellman recently completed a Bachelor of Science, Majoring in Chemical Engineering at the University of Melbourne. He started with Sequana as an intern and transitioned into a full-time role when he completed his studies.
“I’d strongly recommend joining Sequana’s internship program – it’s only brought positives to my work life and my studies as well.”
Options and flexibility are integral to Sequana’s internship program, giving students early access to a range of world-class projects, incorporating varied scopes and different lines of work.
“I’m still a bit unsure as to where I want to go and what I want to do, but Sequana has definitely provided insight into the various options and helped paint a clearer picture for the future.”
“You get to take responsibility and that’s something that I appreciated as a uni student. Sequana puts a lot of trust in you which is great.”
With offices along the East Coast of Australia and team members in Perth, Adelaide, and some working fully remotely in regional parts of the country, Sequana is a company where location doesn’t hinder success or progress; hybrid working is part of our every day at Sequana, and fosters a healthy work-life balance, with regular moments for in-person connection.
“The annual Christmas Dinner was a lot of fun because some of the team work remotely or in our different office locations, so it was a great way to get to meet people I’d been working with face-to-face. It’s always great to see everyone together.”
A people-first culture makes Sequana a leading destination for those willing to embrace the power of human connection, striving to bring out the best in one another.
Callum Brown
Callum Brown is one of our most recent intern appointments, and he’s currently in his second year of a Master of Professional Engineering at The University of Western Australia.
Specialising in software engineering, Callum has excelled in automating administrative tasks across a range of projects via Power BI.
“I felt that this was the most useful work I’ve done here, as each time it is used, it saves another employee’s time.”
Callum recognises the valid capability-building experience at Sequana,
“I’m loving learning about the water industry and finding applications of my skills here. A young company with potential to grow and lots of great people involved,” he said.
