Last week we celebrated a truly special milestone for Sequana: our 5th anniversary!
Founded in November 2019 over a fire pit, by Mike Walsh and Frank Fisseler, Sequana has quickly become one of the fastest-growing project management businesses in Australia, with more than 80 full-time staff and 300+ contractors operating in all major cities in Australia.
As we look back on the incredible journey, made possible by the unwavering dedication of our talented team, the trust of our valued partners, and the encouragement of our supportive community, we spoke to some members of our team about their five highlights or observations from their time at Sequana. We think these revelations tap into what really makes us special.
And of course, we wouldn’t be Sequana without also setting our sights on what lies ahead.
Dive in to learn more about who we are and what we mean to each other as we look back on five incredible years!
LEADERSHIP REFLECTIONS FROM FRANK FISSELER, CEO
When Sequana was first founded in 2019, it wasn’t just a new venture; it was a big leap into the unknown. Wanting to challenge the status quo in project management and bring a fresh, people-first approach to the water sector, we were always going to do things differently!
The power of people over process
Success at Sequana has always been about our people. The collective expertise, passion, and creativity of our staff have been the real drivers behind our growth. It’s not about titles or hierarchy; it’s about bringing the right people together, empowering them, and watching them thrive.
Resilience in uncertain times
We launched Sequana just months before a global pandemic upended the world. Instead of retreating, we adapted, evolved, and came out stronger. Our resilience during these challenging times is a testament to the grit and determination of our team, who didn’t just face uncertainty, they embraced it as an opportunity to innovate.
Leading through partnership, not command
I’ve always believed that leadership is about partnership, not command. It’s about rolling up your sleeves, getting in the trenches with your team, and building trust through action. Over the past five years, I have seen this approach turn clients into long term partners and challenges into opportunities. We have cultivated relationships based on mutual respect, transparency, and a shared commitment to delivering outstanding results.
A relentless pursuit of excellence
At Sequana, we’ve never settled for good enough. From day one, we’ve pushed the boundaries of what we can achieve. Whether it’s implementing cutting edge technology or rethinking how we approach project delivery, our drive for excellence is relentless. We set high standards for ourselves because we believe in the value of exceptional work, not just for our clients but for the industry as a whole.
Looking ahead with confidence
As we celebrate this milestone, I find myself more excited than ever about what lies ahead. The recent partnership with Pemba is a launchpad for the next chapter of Sequana’s growth. But while we look forward, we remain grounded. These core values are the compass that will guide us as we navigate new opportunities and challenges in the years to come.
COLLABORATION AND CAMARADERIE WITH TRUDI WOODWARD, COO
Trudi Woodward, Chief Operations Officer, reflects on the culture of teamwork and collaboration that underpins Sequana’s success.
Memories that last
From commencing at Sequana, the team has thrived on fun & collaboration, creating and sharing memorable moments such as our EOFY and Christmas functions. From magic, pottery, gin-making, to comedians and worldclass sporting legends – we have made sure that we come together to not only celebrate the journey and our achievements, but also to make sure as a team we all have fun.
Thriving, together
Our success has always been driven by the spirit of camaraderie. The competitive tender process can be intense, but our team thrives on mutual support and the thrill of the chase. We’re always online, ready to lend a hand, share insights, and support each other to deliver our best work, ensuring we present the strongest bids possible. Every project win is a collective achievement. When we secure a project, it’s not just a victory for one individual — it’s a celebration of our team’s hard work, collaboration, and shared commitment to excellence.
The best people in our industry
Over the past five years, we’ve brought onboard exceptional talent, expanding our capabilities whilst bringing together some of the brightest talent in the industry. Sequana is home to the best people in the industry – individuals who are not only incredibly talented but also genuinely supportive, passionate, and dedicated.
Supporting one another, always
At Sequana, we believe in supporting one another not just professionally, but personally. Whether it’s celebrating personal milestones such as academic achievements, welcoming new children into the world, climbing mountains, or simply cheering each other on through life’s ups and downs, we take pride in being a team that supports each other through all of life’s events.
The road ahead
With the recent introduction of a Growth Partner, we’re all excited about the future, and the many opportunities to continue growing, innovating, and achieving even greater success together. If the last five years are any indication of what we can collectively achieve, the next five will have to be a lot bigger to top it!
WORK AND PLAY HARD: INSIGHTS FROM DAVID THOMAS, MANAGING DIRECTOR NORTH WEST AND GROWTH & MAJOR PROJECTS
David Thomas, Managing Director North West and Growth & Major Projects, considers the importance of balancing work and play, and how each is an important contributor to the overall achievements of Sequana.
Deep experience matters
The quality of our advice, decisions and the outcomes we deliver requires bringing deep industry experience to projects. Deep experience when it counts pays for itself many times over in the long run. Value isn’t delivered by forcing traditional ‘pyramid’ resourcing models into projects.
‘Getting it done’ is a mindset
Uncertainty and risk are ever-present, and the world is grey. Progress is what turns the grey into black or white. Staying still and waiting for the fog to clear just burns time and money.
How we work matters as much as the work we do
Working collaboratively, transparently and generally acting like a true partner with our client organisations leads to better outcomes, and a more enjoyable journey. The best form of business development is exceptional delivery. Complacency in delivery is a sure-fire way to hinder growth.
Working hard and having fun shouldn’t be mutually exclusive
Afterall, if we don’t enjoy the journey … what’s the point.
CELEBRATING PEOPLE WITH HANNAH WALMSLEY, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR SOUTH EAST
Hannah Walmsley embodies what it means to do things the ‘Sequana Way’. Pushing the limits on and off the field, here, she shares what Sequana means to her.
We get stuff done, and we have fun doing it
One of Sequana’s founding principles has become our mantra. This commitment to enjoying the journey is reflected in every aspect of our culture, and our people are at the heart of it all.
Our people make us who we are
Sequana has always invested in its people and with our evolution we have seen the introduction of the Sequana Academy, our formal mentoring program and continued support for leadership coaching sessions. This provides us with the space to talk about challenges and opportunities in our own personal development. The level of support available is unparalleled.
We are solutions focused
We always find a way through any challenge and focus on solutions. We don’t sit back and wait to be told or directed, we propose options or pathways forward for consideration and are ready to implement. We get things done and we have fun while doing it.
Diversity of experience matters
The calibre of industry experience across Sequana is humbling and provides an incredible network of leaders that are only too happy to support and mentor others to develop key skills across many elements of water industry projects. It’s been inspiring to welcome so many incredible people to the business and to see how their ideas and different experiences have a positive contribution to new initiatives across Sequana. One initiative that stands out is our Social Impact and Belonging (SIB) Committee, whose efforts have enriched our workplace culture and sense of community. Their impactful activities include team excursions, inspiring staff life stories, a powerful R U OK Day session, designated time off for International Self-Care Day, engaging charity events, Kahoot Trivia for team building, and monthly mindfulness and wellness tips. These and many other initiatives continue to foster a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and connected.
Values drive results
It’s been a highlight to witness, learn and be part of Sequana’s evolution as a business. Founded on common innate core values, our growth has provided the opportunity to reflect and articulate what makes us Sequana – both now and into the future. And that future looks incredible, having recently welcomed on board, Pemba, as our strategic growth partner. The next phase is exciting, but knowing we’re supported to maintain the connection to our foundations is the most special part.
STANDING OUT WITH MISAKI NAKAMURA, PROJECT MANAGER
Misaki Nakamura, captures what makes Sequana a standout in the industry and a special place to work.
Embracing versatility
At Sequana, we get the chance to wear many hats, keeping our roles dynamic and diverse. It’s refreshing to avoid being siloed or pigeonholed into a single function – there’s always an opportunity to learn and grow across different areas.
Learning from the best
We’re still learning and growing, but Sequana has brought in experienced professionals from the top of the industry. This blend of new perspectives and expertise ensures we’re building processes with a solid foundation. from the best.
Building a reputation
In just five years, Sequana has become known by some of the biggest players in our industry. We may be a young company, but we’ve certainly made our mark.
Every contribution matters
Being part of a small, close-knit team means every individual’s work has a meaningful impact. At Sequana, every achievement is a step forward in our shared journey.
Agile and adaptive
One of the best parts about Sequana is how nimble and dynamic we are. Our ability to adapt quickly and respond to new opportunities keeps things exciting, and we’re always moving forward.
From the launch of Sequana five years ago to today, our path has been nothing short of extraordinary. As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the moments that have defined us, the people who have inspired us, and the vision that drives us.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our story so far – our team, our partners, and our community. We couldn’t have done it without you. Here’s to the next five years of growth, innovation, and success!
